The record
Fighting between the Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek and the Communists, the party Mao came to lead, ran from 1927. It paused in the united front against Japan and resumed in 1945.
The communist victory produced the People's Republic on 1 October 1949. The Nationalist government withdrew to Taiwan in December 1949.
Battlefield deaths and civilian deaths across those years are not given here as one number. No single census covers both phases of the war. The famine and the Cultural Revolution are later, and they have their own pages.
