The record
In October 1934 the communist forces broke out of the Jiangxi soviet under Nationalist encirclement. The march ended in Shaanxi in October 1935. The commonly repeated distance is about 6,000 miles.
Mao's position in the party leadership was secured at the Zunyi Conference in January 1935, during the march, not before it. The civil war did not end with the march. It paused for the war against Japan and resumed in 1945.
