The record

Chiang Kai-shek led the Kuomintang, the Nationalist Party, after the death of Sun Yat-sen. His forces and the Communist Party fought a civil war from 1927, paused it in a united front against Japan, and resumed it in 1945.

The communist victory produced the People's Republic on 1 October 1949. The Nationalist government withdrew to Taiwan in December 1949. Chiang died in Taipei on 5 April 1975.

This page does not settle the argument over how the Nationalist state was governed. It records the offices, the wars, and the 1949 retreat.
