The record
Aurelius Augustinus was born at Thagaste in 354, taught rhetoric in Carthage, Rome and Milan, and was baptized by Ambrose in 387. Forced into ordination at Hippo in 391, he became bishop about 396.
The Confessions narrate conversion; how far the garden scene of 386 is history or crafted memory remains debated. The City of God answers the sack of Rome in 410 with the earthly city and the heavenly city. His later doctrine of grace hardened against Pelagius; he also came to accept imperial coercion against Donatists.
A philosopher page records the person and the texts. It is not a history of the late empire.
