Mauryan Empire
c. 322–185 BCE
The Mauryan Empire was the first to unite nearly all of India. Chandragupta founded it as Alexander's empire crumbled. His grandson Ashoka, after a bloody conquest, embraced Buddhism and ruled by moral law.
