Otto von Bismarck

1815–1898

Prussian and German statesman, 1815 to 1898, who unified Germany by war and diplomacy. As minister president of Prussia from 1862 he provoked wars with Denmark, Austria and France, then proclaimed the German Empire at Versailles in 1871. Dismissed by the young Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1890, he warned that his successors would ruin his work.
