Otto I
912–973
King of Germany from 936 and emperor from 962 to his death in 973, born in 912, founder of the Holy Roman Empire. He crushed the Magyars at the Lechfeld in 955, ending their raids into Europe. Crowned by the pope in Rome, he bound the German church to the crown and made the empire the leading power of the west.
