Frederick the Great
1712–1786
King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786, born in 1712, who made a middling German state into a great power. He seized Silesia from Austria on his accession and held it through the Seven Years' War against Austria, France and Russia. A flute playing friend of Voltaire, he practiced enlightened absolutism at home.
