The record
Nicolae Ceaușescu took party leadership in 1965 after Gheorghiu-Dej. His 1968 condemnation of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia won Western goodwill while the Securitate deepened domestic control. The July Theses of 1971 tightened culture after visits to China and North Korea.
Decree 770 reshaped demography. In the 1980s debt was paid early by exporting food and cutting heat, light and fuel at home. Systematization cleared districts of Bucharest for the Civic Centre and the Palace of the Parliament.
Protests in Timișoara and Bucharest in December 1989 ended in flight, capture, a one-hour military trial, and execution on Christmas Day. Capital punishment was then abolished. This page files the ruler; the desk article carries the longer chronicle.
