Mustafa Kemal Ataturk
1881–1938
Founder of the Republic of Turkey, 1881 to 1938, who built a modern secular state from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. His victory in the Turkish War of Independence ended the Allied partition of Anatolia. As president from 1923 he abolished the caliphate, replaced Arabic script with Latin, and remade Turkish law and education.
