Michigan, Maine and Iowa will settle the Senate, and none of the three has an Associated Press call
The three Senate races that will decide control of the chamber are still open. The Associated Press lists Michigan, Maine and Iowa as too early to call as of 9:30 p.m. Colorado time. In Iowa, Decision Desk HQ and NBC News have projected Democrat Josh Turek over Republican Representative Ashley Hinson, a projection the Associated Press has not matched with a call, with an estimated 90.9 percent of the vote counted in the Associated Press file. Michigan's count is the slowest of the three: the Associated Press estimated 35.1 percent of the vote counted, and state officials have said Michigan results are not expected until Wednesday. In Maine, the Associated Press estimated 44.1 percent counted in the race between Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson.
Michigan carries the largest prize left. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers are contesting the open seat Gary Peters is leaving. Final polls put El-Sayed ahead by about five points on average, and the race took a late turn on Sunday when Representative Haley Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed, endorsed Rogers. Michigan counts a large mail vote, and its clerks were still working through it on Tuesday night.
Maine asks whether Collins can do again what she has done for thirty years: win in a state that votes Democratic for president. Jackson, the state senate president, led the final New York Times and Siena poll 51 to 45. Nebraska is also uncalled, where independent Dan Osborn is challenging Republican Senator Pete Ricketts, and Osborn has said he will not caucus with either party, which leaves his seat's effect on control unsettled even after a call. Alaska's race between Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola has no count at all in the Associated Press file as of 9:30 p.m. Colorado time, and the state counts mail ballots over 10 to 15 days. Democrats hold 50 seats on the calls made so far and need one more for a majority.
