A University of Michigan student is arrested after shoving a Jewish conservative influencer to the ground at a campus free speech table
University of Michigan police arrested a student on Sunday after she shoved conservative influencer Lizzy Benichou to the ground during a Liberty Under Fire USA tour stop on the Ann Arbor campus, then lunged at her again as officers moved in. Video of the attack, filmed by journalist Cam Higby, has been viewed more than 8 million times. Police said officers witnessed the assault, arrested the student, and released her pending a warrant. No charges had been filed as of Monday, according to the university police department.
The tour stop was a table, a poster board and a question: “Is Islam Compatible with the West?” The student argued with the men behind the table, clapped in one man's face, and then turned on Benichou, who had asked whether the way she was dressed would be acceptable in Iran. The video shows the student shove Benichou to the ground, break free from a bystander who grabbed her, pull off her backpack and charge again before a campus officer and another man stopped her. The officer forced her to the ground and handcuffed her as she struggled. Higby's post of the video says she told officers, as they loaded her into the car, that she should have killed Benichou.
Benichou, who posts as a Jewish conservative commentator, said afterward that she was physically assaulted simply for showing up and exercising her First Amendment rights, thanked the officers who intervened, and said she is safe and receiving care. Liberty Under Fire USA said she plans to press charges to the fullest extent of the law, and identified the attacker as a supporter of Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Michigan. Police have not confirmed that identification, and the university police described the event itself as unpermitted. The attack came two days before Michigan votes in one of the closest Senate races in the country.
