A gunman shoots seven people inside a Fairfield Spirit Halloween store, killing a woman her family says was pregnant, and gets away
A shooter opened fire inside the Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, killing one woman and wounding six other people on the night before Halloween. Police identified the woman killed as Constance Hages, 31, whom her family said was pregnant. Three of the wounded, a 16 year old, a 19 year old and a 32 year old, were in critical condition as of Saturday afternoon. Police say early information points to a targeted incident involving one suspect, and no arrest had been announced by Saturday evening.
The store was full of people buying costumes the night before Halloween. At about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, gunfire broke out inside the Spirit Halloween at Solano Town Center in Fairfield, a mall of more than 130 shops about 45 miles northeast of San Francisco. Seven people were hit. Constance Hages, 31, died. Her family told reporters she was pregnant.
The wounded went to hospitals in two groups. A 16 year old boy, a 19 year old man and a 32 year old man were in critical condition as of Saturday afternoon. A 23 year old man was in stable condition, and two more victims were treated and released. Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall told reporters late Friday that early information led investigators to believe the shooting "stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect" inside the store. Detectives spent Saturday reviewing evidence to identify the person responsible. The FBI's Sacramento field office sent its evidence response team to help Fairfield police work the scene. No suspect had been named and no arrest had been announced by Saturday evening, and police had not described a weapon or a motive.
One shopper's husband described the inside of the store as the shots started. David Bernal said his wife was near the wig section when she heard the gunfire and ran out through an emergency exit.
Fairfield was the second shooting at a Spirit Halloween store that day. Hours earlier, a separate shooting at a Spirit Halloween in Madison Heights, Michigan, left a man wounded, and police there took a 21 year old man into custody as the alleged shooter. Police in the two states have announced no connection between the two shootings, and nothing in the reporting so far links them beyond the chain's name and the calendar. In Fairfield, the work on Saturday was the slow kind: witnesses, video, and a store that had been selling Halloween costumes a day before the holiday, now held as a crime scene while the man who fired inside it is still being looked for.
