Dow rises and Nasdaq slips as markets close Monday ahead of bank earnings and inflation data
Stocks closed mixed on Monday as a heavy week of bank earnings and inflation reports began. The Dow rose 0.3 percent while the S and P 500 eased about 0.1 percent to 7,807.24 and the Nasdaq fell 0.4 percent, as of Monday October 12. Oil rose with Brent at $106.09 a barrel and U.S. crude at $93.28 as of Monday, and the bond market was closed for Columbus Day.
Wall Street started its biggest week of the quarter quietly, closing mixed on Monday with traders waiting on bank earnings and inflation numbers rather than reacting to the weekend's wars.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.3 percent, the S and P 500 slipped about 0.1 percent to 7,807.24, the third highest close in its history, and the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4 percent, with technology stocks leading the declines, as of Monday October 12. The bond market was closed for Columbus Day.
Oil moved the other way. Brent crude rose 1.3 percent to $106.09 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate gained 1.5 percent to $93.28 as of Monday, as investors weighed Saudi Arabia's interception of more Houthi missiles and drones overnight and the suspended operations at Riyadh's airport. Gold futures fell 0.6 percent to $4,165.80 an ounce as the dollar rose.
The week's real tests start Tuesday, when JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup report earnings, along with Johnson and Johnson and UnitedHealth. Wednesday brings the September consumer price index and Thursday the producer price index, the first full read on whether the September rate increase and months of oil above $90 are feeding through into prices.
Stocks entered the week near records after Friday's gains gave the S and P 500 a 1.2 percent weekly rise and the Nasdaq its fourth straight weekly gain. The 10 year Treasury yield ended last week around 5.24 percent, after briefly touching nearly 5.37 percent, its highest in more than 24 years.
