Ethiopian forces enter Adigrat after Eritrean troops pushed back from border city

Ethiopian government forces and militia allies entered the Tigrayan border city of Adigrat on Saturday, days after Eritrean troops were pushed back from the city, Reuters reported. ACLED said drone strikes hit Eritrean forces on Wednesday and Thursday as they withdrew, and residents reported explosions continuing overnight into Friday.

The fighting around Adigrat marks the sharpest escalation yet in the confrontation between Ethiopia and Eritrea, former allies turned enemies. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of an 'all out invasion' and has written to the UN Security Council; Eritrea has demanded Council action under Chapter VII against what it calls Ethiopian aggression. The Council has received both letters but has not yet acted.

An Adigrat resident reported explosions continuing overnight into Friday even as Eritrean forces withdrew. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project said drone strikes targeted Eritrean positions during their withdrawal on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the regional capital Mekelle, federal police are calling on residents to help form a new administration after the withdrawal of the Tigray People's Liberation Front, and Ethiopian Airlines is set to resume flights to Mekelle on Sunday. Neither side has published a confirmed casualty count, and the fighting continues to unfold largely outside the view of international observers.
