Colorado voters decide a governor's race, a Senate seat and 14 statewide measures, with ballots due by 7 p.m.
Colorado voters are deciding races for governor, United States Senate, attorney general, secretary of state and treasurer today, along with all eight House seats and 14 statewide ballot measures. Democrat Phil Weiser faces Republican Victor Marx for governor, as two term Governor Jared Polis is term limited. Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper faces Republican state Senator Mark Baisley. In Colorado Springs' 5th District, Republican Representative Jeff Crank faces Democrat Jessica Killin, and in the 8th District Republican Representative Gabe Evans faces Democrat Manny Rutinel in one of the most competitive House races in the country. About 1.6 million ballots had been returned as of November 2, according to Colorado Public Radio: 685,000 from unaffiliated voters, 494,000 from Democrats and 388,000 from Republicans. Ballots must reach county clerks by 7 p.m. tonight to count.
The 14 measures cover ground Colorado voters rarely get to decide all at once. Amendment 81 would require notifying federal immigration authorities of certain criminal charges. Amendment 82 would put a right to buy and sell natural gas in the state constitution, and Amendment 83 a right to hunt and fish. Amendment 84 would require an identification number on mail ballots. Amendment 85 would require plain language ballot titles, and Amendment 86 would set the rules for mid decade congressional redistricting. Amendment 87 would replace the state's flat income tax with a graduated tax. Proposition NN would let the state keep revenue above the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights limit for K-12 education and children's programs. Proposition 132 would raise penalties for fentanyl crimes, and Proposition 133 would impose life without parole for child sex trafficking. Proposition 134 would designate school sports teams by biological sex, and Proposition 135 would ban gender related surgery for minors. Proposition 136 would cap the state income tax rate, and Proposition 137 would add a sporting goods sales tax for conservation and wildfire prevention.
The statewide offices below the governor are contested too. Democrat Jena Griswold faces Republican Michael Allen for attorney general. Democrat Amanda Gonzalez faces Republican James Wiley for secretary of state. Democrat Jeff Bridges faces Republican Kevin Grantham for treasurer.
Returns so far run ahead of 2022. Colorado Public Radio put returned ballots about four points above the 2022 pace at the same point, with mail ballots making up 98.5 percent of returns. Democrats had returned ballots at a rate of about 50 percent of their registered voters, Republicans at about 44 percent and unaffiliated voters at about 33 percent, as of November 2. The Justice Department is sending 10 monitors in five pairs to Adams County, and congressional observers are in the 5th District in El Paso County and the 8th District across Adams, Weld and Larimer counties. Voting centers are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and any voter in line at 7 p.m. can still vote.
