Two shootings outside Legion Field after the Magic City Classic kill one person and wound eight
One person was killed and eight were wounded in two shootings minutes apart outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night, after the Magic City Classic football game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. Mayor Randall Woodfin said on Sunday that the first shooting left six victims and a second, across the street from the stadium, left three more less than eight minutes later. A 17 year old who is not affiliated with either university is in custody on a 48 hour hold, and the mayor said the teenager had a gun fitted with a Glock conversion switch. The person killed died at the scene, and two of the wounded were in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.
The game itself drew nearly 70,000 people. Alabama A&M beat Alabama State 31 to 28 in the 85th playing of the Classic, the country's largest HBCU football game, a rivalry that goes back more than a century. Most spectators and families had already left the stadium grounds when the shooting started, Police Chief Michael Pickett said, in an area along Graymont Avenue where vendors were still set up after the game.
The first shots came at about 7:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue, behind the south end zone. Officers found multiple people shot. Less than eight minutes later, a second shooting across the street from the stadium added three more victims, Woodfin told reporters at a Sunday afternoon briefing. Fire Chief Cory Moon said the nine victims ranged in age from 19 to about 30. One died at the scene. Of those taken to hospitals, two were in critical condition and five were in stable condition as of Sunday, according to Moon.
Police recovered multiple firearms at the scene. The 17 year old in custody is being held for 48 hours while the investigation continues, Woodfin said, and is not a student at either university. Investigators have not announced a motive, and the names of the person killed and the wounded had not been released on Sunday.
Pickett said he was very grateful that more people were not injured, given the crowds still in the area. Police shut down the remaining tailgating around the stadium on Saturday night and asked people to stay away from the Legion Field property while detectives worked.
