The Alexander brothers each receive 30 years in prison for sex trafficking

News story

Tal Alexander, 40, and his twin brothers Oren and Alon Alexander, 39, were each sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on Tuesday by US District Judge Valerie Caproni in Manhattan. The brothers, two of them founders of the luxury real estate brokerage Official, were convicted seven months ago of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and other sex crimes. Prosecutors said they used wealth and social position for at least 14 years to lure women and girls to parties and trips where they were drugged and raped, and more than 70 women said they were assaulted. Prosecutors had asked for life sentences. The defense asked for the 15 year mandatory minimum.

The hearing ran for hours, and the victims spoke first. One woman, using the name Katie Moore in court, addressed the three brothers directly. “These men spent years treating women and girls as though our lives, body, voices, humanity meant nothing. But we are not disposable and they are not untouchable,” she said.

Judge Caproni called the brothers conduct monstrous and said they had wreaked havoc on the lives of the women they attacked. She asked how men who had never acknowledged what they did could be rehabilitated. Assistant US Attorney Elizabeth Espinosa argued for the maximum. “For years, they honed their methods of luring women with the promise of luxury,” she said, and the brothers were “completely unmoved by the path of suffering they left behind them.” Caproni sentenced each brother to 30 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release, with sex offender treatment ordered during the prison terms. Oren and Alon Alexander were each fined 300,000 dollars and Tal Alexander 350,000 dollars. Oren Alexander was ordered to pay a further 50,000 dollars at once, tied to his conviction for sexually exploiting a minor in 2009. Restitution to the victims will be set in further proceedings.

The crimes, as prosecutors presented them across a six week trial, ran for at least 14 years through Manhattan, the Hamptons and Aspen. Oren and Tal Alexander co founded Official, a brokerage that sold luxury homes to wealthy and celebrity clients, and Alon Alexander worked as an executive at the family security company, Kent Security. Prosecutors said the brothers used that standing to draw women and girls to parties, trips and private gatherings, where some were drugged and raped. More than 70 women said they were assaulted by one or more of the brothers. In one case from January 2017, prosecutors said three girls celebrating their final year of high school at an Aspen nightclub were drugged, brought to the brothers hotel with the promise of an after party, and assaulted there.

The brothers maintained their innocence at sentencing. Tal Alexander described a work hard, play hard mentality and acknowledged that their behavior had hurt people feelings. Their lawyers argued for the mandatory minimum of 15 years and pointed at the effect of long sentences on the brothers families. A separate 20 year sentence on additional counts will run at the same time as the 30 year terms. US Attorney Jamie McDonald said after the hearing that the sentence makes clear that “this craven, sinister conduct is extraordinarily serious and will be met with serious punishment.” New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, in a statement issued through the US Attorney office, said the brothers “will finally face the consequences they deserve for the incredible harm they inflicted on so many.” Florida prosecutors have also brought state charges against Oren and Alon Alexander, and those cases are separate from the federal one.
