The FBI raids the Beverly Hills home of Eric Swalwell's billionaire donor
FBI agents raided the Beverly Hills mansion of Stephen Cloobeck on Tuesday, searching for electronic devices and records pertaining to prostitution as part of the federal investigation into former Representative Eric Swalwell, a senior law enforcement official told Reuters. Cloobeck was not home at the time and nobody was arrested. Attorneys for Cloobeck and for Swalwell did not respond to requests for comment.
Federal agents went through a billionaire's house in Beverly Hills on Tuesday morning, and the man they are investigating was not the man who owns it.
The FBI searched the North Roxbury Drive mansion of Stephen Cloobeck, the former chief executive of Diamond Resorts International, looking for electronic devices and records pertaining to prostitution, a senior law enforcement official told Reuters. The search belongs to the investigation of Eric Swalwell, the former California congressman. Cloobeck was not home. Nobody was arrested. Lawyers for both men did not answer emails seeking comment.
Cloobeck made his money in timeshares, selling Diamond Resorts to Apollo Global Management for 2.2 billion dollars in 2016. He ran briefly for California governor last year, polled at about 1 percent, withdrew, and backed Swalwell's run for the same office. During the campaign Swalwell stayed at Cloobeck's home several times and used the property for political events. When allegations of sexual assault and misconduct against Swalwell became public, Swalwell retreated to that house, and he recorded one of his last videos denying the allegations while staying there. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies arrested Cloobeck in May on a charge of attempting to prevent or dissuade a victim from testifying, the New York Times reported.
Swalwell resigned his House seat and ended his campaign for governor in April, after four women accused him of sexual misconduct ranging from sexual assault to sending unsolicited explicit images. He apologized for mistakes in judgment, said the allegations are false, and vowed to fight them. In August the FBI searched his Washington home and seized his electronic devices at San Francisco airport. Local law enforcement agencies in New York and Los Angeles have announced their own investigations into the alleged assaults, and the Department of Homeland Security has said it looked into allegations that Swalwell illegally employed a Brazilian nanny.
A raid on a donor's house widens the visible reach of the case. Investigators do not raid the home of a candidate's host and patron over nothing they can get with a phone call, and the prostitution records named in the search tell the public what line of inquiry the bureau is running. What agents took from North Roxbury Drive, and what it says about Swalwell, stays inside the investigation for now.
