12 people are injured in a shooting near Florida A&M's stadium on homecoming night, and six of them are children

News story

At least 12 people were injured, including six children, in a shooting Saturday night near Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, during homecoming weekend for Florida A&M University, police said. Eleven of the victims were shot. No arrests had been made as of October 25.

The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. on Saturday at the corner of Perry Street and Manatee Street, next to Bragg Memorial Stadium. Florida A&M had played Arkansas Pine Bluff that day for homecoming, and the streets around the stadium were still crowded when the shots started.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell gave the count at a press conference early Sunday. Twelve people were injured. Eleven of them were shot, and the twelfth, the grandmother of one of the victims, was hurt as she ran from the scene. Six of the victims are adults and six are children. The youngest is 11 years old. One victim was in critical condition, two others were seriously injured, and eight were in stable condition, as of October 25. One of the victims is a Florida A&M student.

Revell said the first officers on the scene could not get ambulances through the crowd, so they picked victims up and carried them to transport in their arms. "Our priority is to determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring the people that are responsible for this to justice," he said.

Police say a fight broke out between two or three people before the shooting, and they believe one person fired the shots. They called it an isolated incident. No one had been arrested as of early Sunday, and police asked witnesses to call the department or Crime Solvers.

The university told its campus community to stay away from the area and said the campus itself was safe. Florida State University, about a mile away, sent its own emergency alert and said no one from its community appeared to be involved.
