A new NBC News poll finds 71 percent of Americans say the country is on the wrong track, the highest share of President Trump second term
An NBC News Decision Desk poll taken with SurveyMonkey found 71 percent of American adults think the country is on the wrong track, the highest share of President Trump second term, with his approval at 34 percent among adults and 66 percent disapproving. Among registered voters his approval was 39 percent, and 55 percent of registered voters said they would choose Democrats over Republicans to control Congress, as of October 19.
The third major poll in a week has landed in the same place as the other two. The NBC News Decision Desk survey, taken with SurveyMonkey, found 71 percent of adults saying the country is on the wrong track, the highest margin of the president second term, as of October 19. His approval stood at 34 percent among adults, with 66 percent disapproving and 51 percent saying they strongly disapprove, a second term high for that measure in NBC polling. Among registered voters the picture was a little less stark: 39 percent approve and 61 percent disapprove.
For Congress, 55 percent of registered voters said they would choose Democrats over Republicans to control it for the final years of the term. The survey sits alongside the Washington Post ABC News Ipsos poll released on October 18, which put approval at 33 percent, and a Fox News poll released on October 14 that also marked a low for the president in that network polling across both of his terms. Three different pollsters, three different samples, and the same direction.
Neither party is liked. Forty three percent of adults view the Democratic Party favorably against 57 percent unfavorably, and Republicans stand at 37 percent favorable to 63 percent unfavorable. The election on November 3 will decide control of the House and the Senate for the last two years of the term, on a Senate map where Republicans are defending competitive seats in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, according to the Cook Political Report.
The NBC survey covered 19,135 adults from September 28 to October 12, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. A poll taken across those dates cannot capture the last week of the campaign, and it is a measurement, not a result. What it measures, consistently with its rivals, is an electorate that thinks the country is headed the wrong way and is telling every pollster who asks that prices and the war are the reasons.
