Bend names two of the dead: Rhoam Summer, 5, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25, and identifies the shooter as a former pupil of the classroom he attacked
Bend police on Friday identified two of the four people killed at Silver Rail Elementary School: Rhoam Summer, 5, a kindergartner, and Megan Lambert, 25, a teacher and volleyball coach. The families of the other two children killed, boys aged 8 and 11, asked that their names be withheld. The attacker was named as Griffin J. John II, 16, a former special needs pupil at the school, and the bystander who shot him dead was identified by family and multiple outlets as Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a parent at the school, as of October 16.

A day after the shooting, Bend began putting names to the loss, and the picture that emerged was narrower and harder than the first reports suggested. Every person shot was in the same room: a special needs classroom near the entrance of Silver Rail Elementary School, and the boy who attacked it had once been a pupil in that classroom.
Police Chief Mike Krantz told a Friday news conference that the dead who can be named are Rhoam Summer, 5, who had just started kindergarten, and Megan Lambert, 25, a teacher whose family called Silver Rail her dream job. The families of the other two boys killed, aged 8 and 11, asked for their names to be kept private. A 7 year old girl who uses a wheelchair was shot and remains in critical condition, as does a second teacher, 54. The classroom will remain a crime scene at least through October 20, Krantz said, and tips are being taken by the FBI.
The attacker was identified as Griffin J. John II, 16, of Bend. He was a special needs student at Silver Rail when he attended it, and he is not currently enrolled in the Bend La Pine district. Police say he came on foot, threw his shotgun over a fence and climbed over after it, and was first confronted near the front of the school by people in passing vehicles. One driver was shot at and called 911 at 12:58 p.m. The second driver followed him inside. That man, identified by his family and by multiple news outlets as Kaylub Giamanco, 36, a parent of children at the school, had a gun legally kept in his car. He found the attacker in an altercation with a teacher and shot him several times. Krantz said the intervention likely saved lives.
There was a second act of resistance inside the room. A teacher who was not shot threw her phone at the attacker, tackled him and fought him for the 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Krantz said she almost certainly prevented more bloodshed. The weapon, a Maverick 88, was purchased by the attacker's mother, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the case who spoke to the Associated Press on Thursday.
Superintendent Steven Cook said a crisis counselling centre at the Bend public library had already seen more than 100 people by Friday, and that the district will review its emergency procedures and safety planning. The district points to the money it has spent on secure entries, locks, cameras and fencing. On Thursday those measures were tested in the plainest way: the front door held, and the attacker shot his way through a back door instead. What police still have not given is a motive. They have not said why a former pupil walked back to his old classroom, and nothing released as of Friday evening answers that question. The picture with this story is an illustration of a school memorial, not a photograph of Silver Rail.
