Saudi coalition says it destroyed a cruise missile over the Medina region, and the Houthis call the claim a blatant lie
The Saudi led coalition said on Thursday it intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile over the province of Medina, home to one of Islam's holiest cities, while notably assigning no blame for the launch. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree denied the group carried out any operation against Saudi territory that day and called the Medina claim a blatant and grave falsehood. Saudi Arabia also destroyed a drone over its oil producing Eastern Province on Thursday, as of October 16.
A missile over Medina is not like a missile anywhere else, and both sides of this war know it.
The Saudi led coalition announced on Thursday, in a short statement from spokesman Maj Gen Turki al Maliki, that its air defences had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile in the Medina region. The statement named no target inside the region and, strikingly, assigned no blame for the launch. Medina is the city where the Prophet Muhammad established the Muslim community, the second holiest place in Islam, and an attack on it would carry a weight far beyond its military value.
The Houthis answered within the day. Military spokesman Brig Gen Yahya Saree said the Yemeni armed forces had carried out no targeting operation against Saudi territory on Thursday and described the Medina claim as a blatant and grave falsehood. The denial matters because of who is making it. The Houthis have claimed their strikes on Riyadh's airport and on Saudi oil facilities loudly and repeatedly, and they have previously pledged not to attack the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. A group that advertises its attacks is denying this one, and the coalition that announced the interception is not saying who fired. What is established is narrower than either side's rhetoric: a coalition statement, a denial, and no independently verified account of the missile's origin or destination.
The rest of Thursday was not ambiguous. Saudi Arabia said it also destroyed a drone over the Eastern Province, the kingdom's oil producing heartland. Riyadh's international airport remains suspended after the Houthi strikes of the past two weeks, and dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed at Jeddah. The current round of fighting began last month after the Houthis seized ground along the Bab el Mandeb Strait, and the Saudi backed coalition has been fighting to retake it since. In the same AP roundup, hospital officials said an Israeli strike north of Gaza City killed one man on Thursday.
The Medina claim now sits between a spokesman's post and a spokesman's denial, unresolved. If a missile was truly aimed at the region of the Prophet's city, the war has crossed a line its own combatants had drawn. If it was not, the claim itself is a weapon, and it has already been fired.
