Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia kills at least 7, including 3 children, after aerial bombs hit apartment blocks

A Russian overnight strike on the city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least seven people, including three children, when aerial bombs destroyed the entrance of an apartment building and damaged dozens more. Rescuers were still searching the rubble on Saturday as Ukraine's air force reported 160 Russian drones launched overnight.

A Russian strike on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least seven people, including three children, and wounded more than ten others early Saturday morning, the regional governor said, as rescuers searched the rubble for survivors.

Governor Mykhailo Semikin said Russian aerial bombs hit several locations at once in the early hours, destroying an entire entrance section of an apartment building and damaging at least 26 residential buildings in the Shevchenko and Voznesenovsky districts. The State Emergency Service extinguished fires and continued searching through the debris. Among the wounded were a 14 year old girl and a 12 year old boy. The fate of more people remained unknown.

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 160 attack drones against the country overnight, including 110 jet powered Shahed drones, and that air defenses shot down or suppressed 117 of them. Hits were recorded at 14 locations.

The exchange ran both ways. Ukraine's drones struck Russia's southern Rostov region overnight, injuring six people and damaging apartment buildings, a railway bridge, and two vessels, the regional governor said. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it destroyed a bulk carrier at sea that it said was transporting military cargo for Ukraine to the port of Odesa. Independent verification of the claims remains difficult.

The strikes came one day after President Trump announced his deal to buy Russian diesel, which Kyiv warned would help bankroll Moscow's war. The Associated Press reported that the aerial war has killed more than 55 people in Ukraine over the past four days.
