Prosecutors say murder of Ann Widdecombe was politically motivated, tied to terror plot against Farage
At London's Old Bailey, prosecutors said Joshua Kerry's killing of Ann Widdecombe, 78, was 'politically and ideologically motivated' and linked to a terror plot targeting Nigel Farage, with a target list including Kemi Badenoch, Richard Tice, Lee Anderson and Robert Jenrick.

The murder of former British cabinet minister Ann Widdecombe was "politically and ideologically motivated" and "inextricably linked" to a terrorist plot targeting Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, prosecutors told London's Old Bailey on Friday, where Joshua Kerry, 28, appeared in court.
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Devon on July 8, struck 21 times with a hammer. Prosecutors now allege the killing was the opening act of a broader campaign of political violence: an attempted break-in at Farage's home, and a target list that included senior Conservatives Kemi Badenoch, Richard Tice, Lee Anderson and Robert Jenrick. The case is set for trial on June 8.
This is among the most serious political violence cases Britain has seen in years, not because of the victim's fame alone but because of what prosecutors allege the killer intended. A murder as prelude to a terror campaign against the leaders of two political factions is a direct attack on democratic politics itself. The target list spans the Reform UK leadership and prominent Tories, which places the alleged plot at the center of Britain's nationalist and conservative right.
It is important to be precise about where the case stands. These are prosecution allegations, not findings; Kerry is presumed innocent, and the trial is eight months away. But the prosecution's framing, delivered in open court today, is already a matter of public record, and it reframes the July killing from a murder case into a national security case. Britain has been here before with the murders of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and Sir David Amess in 2021, and the political class will read this exactly the way the prosecution wants it read: as a warning that the people who run the country's politics are being hunted as targets.
